The essentials
When do you need a licence? To skipper a motor boat with more than 4.5 kW (6 hp) in French waters. Below that power, or on a sailing boat, no licence is required.
Which licence? The coastal licence (permis côtier) lets you navigate up to 6 nautical miles from a shelter. Beyond that, you need the offshore extension (hauturier). Rivers and canals need the inland option (fluvial).
How is the training organised? In an approved school: at least 5 hours of theory and 3 h 30 of practice, including time at the helm. Minimum age: 16.
What is the exam?A multiple-choice test of 40 questions; you pass with 5 mistakes or fewer. The practical part is validated by your instructor.
How much does it cost?On the Mediterranean, the total median cost is €455 (from €343 to €657), including the €78 tax stamp and the €30 exam fee.
Is it taught in English?Courses and the exam are organised in French. Some schools can help in English: ask them when you send your request.
